What We Know About the Victims of the Bondi Beach Shooting

A minimum of 16 lives were killed and over 40 sustained injuries when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the death toll is 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to hospital.

The deceased have not yet been formally identified, but police believe their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the victims who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She told the events leading up to the attack, stating they were standing when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message read.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, as per reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain under care, with several in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
