The Porcine Pardon: Pig Named Six Seven Spared by Miami Dade County Mayor.
Although not quite at the equivalent scale as sparing holiday birds, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She is worthy of this pardon. Her criminal record is spotless,” stated the mayor in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued since the commencement of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “I hope she experiences a prosperous future free from concern.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of consuming swine during the holidays, was founded to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The swine, contributed by a first responder, was named for the current slang trend of young people yelling “6-7” – deriving from a musical verse – often seemingly at random. The phrase became so pervasive that a prominent word reference recently declared “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Peaceful Retirement
The pardoned swine is now destined to live out its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to open the festive period,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.
“It captures the essence of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and based in heritage that unite the community. Annually, we are delighted to mark culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
