In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Taking Place

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of leading political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
