Federal agriculture authorities stated recently that monthly food benefits from a major federal welfare initiatives won't be issued in November due to the ongoing federal closure.
Shutdown Extends Into 25th Day
The government shutdown lasted its 25th day as officials revealed the news, which followed appeals by more than two hundred Democratic representatives pushing the department to utilize emergency reserves to pay for the upcoming nutrition payments.
“Ultimately, the well has run dry,” the USDA stated. “Now, assistance will not be provided” beginning in November.
Millions Affected
Tens of millions of people depend on these monthly payments, per federal data. In certain states, including one southwestern state, reliance on this assistance reaches 21% of residents.
Documents reviewed by journalists showed that federal authorities would not access contingency funding for the upcoming payments.
Partisan Impasse
Republicans and Democrats remain deadlocked regarding how to support and resume government operations.
Remarks from the director at a budget research center noted that the administration had opportunities to act sooner to prevent benefits from running out.
“It could have, and should have made moves weeks ago to make arrangements to utilize available money,” the statement continued. “Instead, officials could opt out in an effort to gain political advantage” while GOP lawmakers attempt to influence Democratic senators to vote for legislation that would resume federal functions.
States Prepare
