No fewer than thirteen individuals lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” declared the head of state.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an rapid speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also raised persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party called for an urgent halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in full accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these strategic initiatives.
