New York City Mayor Eric Adams Plans to Back Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayoral Race

NYC's current mayor Eric Adams has announced his decision to support Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, even after an extended period of strained relations between the pair of Democrats.

An Unexpected Turnaround After Previous Accusations

Just last month, Adams had strongly criticized Cuomo, labeling him a “snake and a untruthful person” and accusing him of having “a career of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Nonetheless, in a recent statement, Adams reversed course, stating he now plans to support Cuomo in neighborhoods where he holds significant backing.

“I think that it is imperative to mobilize the Black and brown communities that have suffered from gentrification on how important this election is,” Adams stated.

He added, “Residents have seen their rents increase in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been disregarded in those neighborhoods, and I’m going to go to those neighborhoods and talk directly with community leaders and organizations and I will appear with the former governor in those neighborhoods and get them motivated.”

Election Landscape and Current Developments

The mayoral contest has so far been shaped by the struggle between Cuomo and democratic socialist his main rival, whose rise in the polls has attracted attention worldwide and symbolized hopes for a revitalized progressive wing of the Democratic party.

In a recent mayoral debate, both the democratic socialist and Republican nominee his conservative opponent declared they would refuse Adams’s endorsement if extended.

Earlier this year, Adams had launched his re-election campaign as an unaffiliated candidate after being indicted on legal accusations which were later dismissed in return for his assistance with government enforcement actions across the city.

At an separate media briefing on the same day, Adams responded to reporters asking about the endorsement plan by saying, “Andrew and I will appear together later today.”

This development came a day after Adams and Cuomo were spotted sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's season opener at Madison Square Garden, which occurred immediately following a heated mayoral debate.
