The acclaimed crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh season, confirmed by the BBC.

A brand new six-part season created by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the production team.

The actress expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."

The previous series concluded in 2021 with a finale that attracted more than 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating for some time, but official word only arrived this week.

New Challenges for The Team

Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue working to tackle corruption within the police force.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.

However, his case could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still active in the shadows, the teaser hinted.

In a statement, Jed Mercurio commented: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had countless followers watch the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh installment."

He added: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston described being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm so excited the show is returning! Eager to work with Jed, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."

"Delighted with the news and anticipating those mercurial twists and turns."

Series Legacy

The drama launched in 2012 and became a highly successful television series of the past ten years, attracting guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.

Broadcasters haven't revealed when the upcoming series will hit screens.

The conclusion of season six drew the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.

However, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
