Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Legend and Cultural Icon, Passes Away at Eighty-One Years Old
The world grieves the passing of Jimmy Cliff, the renowned Jamaican musician and performer whose distinctive voice was instrumental in spreading the reggae genre worldwide. He has died at the age of eighty-one.
“With deep sorrow that I share that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure episode followed by pneumonia,” wrote his wife Latifa on Instagram. “I am thankful for his family, friends, fellow artists and coworkers who shared his journey. To all his supporters globally, please know that your encouragement was his strength throughout his entire professional life … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest in peace. I will honor your wishes.” The message was co-signed by their children, Lilty and Aken.
Cliff gained fame for hit songs including “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, “I Can See Clearly Now” and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People”. His optimistic musical style and positive spirit brought him a large and longstanding fanbase.
Beyond his musical accomplishments, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972’s crime drama “The Harder They Come”, a performance that was highly acclaimed and is viewed as a cornerstone of film in Jamaica.
Jimmy Cliff was among the select few of artists, alongside Bob Marley and other greats, to be awarded the esteemed Jamaican Order of Merit.
