Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He Claims They Should Face Capital Punishment

Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced anger after Donald Trump alleged a coalition of Democratic representatives of being "traitors" and asserted they should be arrested and sentenced "through capital punishment" following their publication of a disputed video.

The Recording That Triggered the Controversy

The video footage, published on earlier this week, features six Democratic elected officials who previously acted in defense or intelligence roles.

"Like us, you all made an pledge to safeguard and uphold this founding document," the lawmakers declared in the short video. "And right now, the threats to our democratic foundation don't only come from overseas, but from right here at home. Our regulations are explicit, you can reject unlawful commands, you can reject unlawful commands, you must decline unlawful commands. No one has to follow directives that break the legal system or our constitution."

Donald Trump's Incensed Response

The recorded statement appeared to prompt a angry response from the former president.

On the following morning, Trump wrote on his social media platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In an additional publication, he declared: "This represents really serious, and Risky to our United States. Their statements cannot be permitted to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a subsequent message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also redistributed a declaration that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Party Officials Respond

Following Trump's remarks on that day, Democratic leadership issued a unified statement censuring the statements.

"Partisan aggression has no role in this nation," they stated. "Representatives who participated in the video all acted our nation with exceptional national pride and excellence. We clearly censure Donald Trump's disgusting and risky death threats against members of Congress, and urge House Republicans to strongly do the same."

The opposition officials also stated that they had been in communication with protective services "to guarantee the safety of these officials and their relatives."

"Donald Trump must immediately take down these extreme digital publications and withdraw his violent discourse before he leads to violence," the declaration continued.

Representatives' Defiant Answer

The officials who appeared in the video also published a declaration.

"We identify as ex-military personnel and security experts who love this country and made an pledge to defend and uphold the constitution of the United States," they said. "That oath is permanent, and we intend to honor it. No warning, intimidation, or incitement will deter us from that important duty."

"The significant point is that the ex-president considers it liable to punishment by capital punishment for us to repeat the legal requirements," they added. "Our service members should know that we have their support as they carry out their vow to the national charter and duty to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our obligation."

They continued: "All citizens must come together and censure the president's demands for our murder and political violence. This is a moment for ethical certainty."

More Political Comments

The Senate Democratic leader also censured Trump's statements and shared on online networks: "We must be absolutely clear: the ex-commander in chief is calling for the death of public representatives."

He continued: "This represents an clear THREAT. Every Senator, all representatives, every American – irrespective of political affiliation – should condemn this without delay and unconditionally."

The Republican House speaker justified Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "treason", describing the video as "extremely improper", stating: "It is very harmful, you have leading members of the legislature telling soldiers to ignore directives, I think that represents unprecedented in US history."

The Conservative representative also reportedly informed media outlets that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the violation of sedition" but that "legal experts have to examine the language and decide all that."

Executive Branch Response

During a administration briefing on Thursday afternoon, when inquired by a media member, "Does the president want to kill elected officials?", the executive branch representative replied: "Certainly not."

"Let's be clear about what the president is addressing," the official said. "You have current representatives of the US Congress who worked together to arrange a recorded statement to members of the national defense, to serving soldiers urging them to disobey the president's legal commands."

She added: "The integrity of our military depends on the command structure, and if that system is violated, it can lead to people getting killed, it can lead to chaos, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are essentially encouraging."
