Wilfried Nancy insisted he was not afraid of losing his job, claiming, “I believe we are very near to changing our fortunes,” even after edging perilously close to the exit with a convincing defeat by the Ibrox side.
Another Capitulation Sees Old Firm Defeat
The Hoops had led Rangers at the break but a disastrous second period enabled the Gers to pull level on points with the reigning league title holders. The French coach, who was appointed in December, has now presided over six defeats in eight matches.
“There is unity at the club,” stated Nancy.
Questioned about the speculation, Nancy responded: “It’s not on my mind. I think about finding ways to get the team to be good on the fine details.
Supporters' Anger On Display
Celtic’s support made their feelings clear – directed at the board and manager – by gathering at Parkhead. The board would be most likely to bring back the former boss, who had a fruitful interim spell before Nancy was hired, if the Frenchman were sacked.
“Wins and losses [that leads to pressure]. That is the situation for the moment. But in stating that’s how it is, it doesn’t mean that I am pessimistic. Not at all. The message is we are really close, really, really close to change the narrative.”
Focus on the Details
The coach continues to cling to the fact Celtic play well for a half at a time. In fact, were it not for missed chances they could have been better than 1-0 up. “I saw enough other than the fact that we missed more goals,” he said. “I accept that we lost, but I must remain fair.
“The performance we had at stages was exceptionally high. That is a fact. And I would not speak so positively if it was not the case. Therefore, in terms of results, I said this is the same story. Which is why I believe we are nearly there to things turning around. Currently: details, details, details.”
“There were plenty of positives that we did, as was the case today. The issue now comes down to consistency. My message would change the same. That’s why I am a big believer we will manage to fix this.”
Opposition Reaction Stance
The victorious boss refused to contemplate a title charge in spite of what appeared to be a landmark win. “We take it game by game, and we can gradually build a challenge,” he said. “The belief in the group is excellent.”
