A Account of Unexpected Generosity: The Time a University Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dormitory Ground
Back in the year 2006, I made a trip to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. I figured to arrange a place to stay when I arrived, however upon reaching the city, a major event was in town and all the youth hostels and affordable lodging had no vacancies.
As a visitor from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind perhaps I could bed down in the terminal – but soon learned Canberra airport, not like the one back home, closes around the clock. Not knowing what my next move should be and growing worried, I caught a city-bound bus and began walking in the direction of a gaming venue, reasoning I could pass the night in a place that stayed open through the night. This was not ideal at my peak for acing a crucial interview the next morning, but as a broke student, luxury accommodation was impossible.
Our society requires more people like that woman.
Apparently, I appeared out of place as a young woman noticed me wandering around the city and inquired if everything was alright. I explained my predicament and without hesitation she suggested I could crash on the ground in her student dorm at the local university – which was perfect, as that’s where my interview would take place the next morning. Generously, she also provided me some free dinner: one filled rolls she had taken home her part-time job. This gave me a hot shower and a protected spot to rest to spend the night.
Looking back, I can appreciate the significant risk she took as a woman letting a man she had only just encountered sleep on her floor. At that time I existed within my own unawareness and did not consider to such safety concerns. Today, as a parent, it astounds me she did that – but still very grateful.
I never did study at ANU, and I lost touch with that kind stranger again, but her act remains etched in my mind that incredible gesture of generosity. My sincere desire is that the universe has rewarded her act of kindness abundantly. The world needs more individuals who show such kindness.
